How Do You Get a Mexican Passport?

Your simple, step-by-step guide to a Mexican passport—at home or abroad.

Trip coming up? Don’t panic. Getting a Mexican passport can be simple. You book a free appointment, bring the right papers, and go in person. Many people get it the same day. Here’s how.

The short answer

To get a Mexican passport, you must be a Mexican citizen (by birth or naturalization). Book a free appointment with the SRE (in Mexico) or a Mexican consulate (abroad). What you need (adults)

Proof you are Mexican: birth certificate, certificate/declaration of nationality, or naturalization letter (original). Details.
Official photo ID: INE, matrícula, professional ID, or similar. Abroad, a U.S. driver’s license or local government ID can work. Accepted IDs.
CURP (if applicable) and completed form (the office fills it for you; you review and sign). The form is OP-5. Sample form.

What about kids (minors)?

Both parents or legal guardians must say “yes.” If one can’t go, use the OP-7 permission form (signed at an SRE office or another Mexican consulate). Bring the child’s birth certificate, the parents’ IDs, and the consent. OP-7 guide (LA), OP-7/II (distance), IDs for minors (Houston).

Note: Children under 3 years can get 1-year or 3-year passports. Rule.

Do not use “fixer” pages: appointments are free on official sites.

How long does it take?

At many consulates (for example, in the U.S.), you often get the passport the same day if your papers are correct. It usually takes about two hours. LA consulate.

In Mexico, SRE says delivery is the same day once you meet all requirements. SRE.

Some embassies in other countries may need more time (for example, 30–45 days). Plan ahead. Netherlands embassy.

How much does it cost (2025)?

In Mexico (MXN): 3 years: $1,730; 6 years: $2,350; 10 years: $4,120. Seniors (60+), people with disabilities, and Mexico–Canada farm workers can get 50% off (some limits apply). Official fees (adults), Official fees (minors).
